Games Consoles and Technology
Article by Chris
Video gaming is currently in its 7th Generation with the inclusion of the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii consoles heading the industry. It started with the first ever games console, the Magnavox Odyssey. Which was not initially successful so therefore not kick-starting the gaming industry that we see today. The industry really took off when Atari released its Pong video game that revolutionised Video Gaming. Thus the concept of today’s video game set up was born.
Today, we see Blu-ray and Wi-Fi technology as standard in current games consoles. Along with countless other advances such as motion sensing and voice technology which are made popular by Microsoft’s Kinect for the Xbox 360.
Games consoles to some degree have turned into the muscle of the world leading software and technology manufacturers, With constant advances in technology being instantly placed inside or with that companies games console.
Currently we have assets such as the Kinect, wireless controllers, more memory and power you can shake a stick at, and thousands of game developers just itching to make money with the consoles. So what is in store for the industry in the future? with regards to technology anyway.
Firstly, I can confirm that consoles will never get to the stage where they are cheap at launch, it just won’t happen. When a new console is developed and released, it has the latest technology inside it, which is very expensive to make. In fact Sony don’t make much from the PS3 consoles at all. Secondly, many people complain about the reliability of the consoles, this will never change either. They are designed to last until the day after the warranty runs out so you have to run out a buy a new one.
Visual Technology-wise I suspect that 3D technology will very soon be integrated with games on a wider scale than just the NDS. I also think Microsoft’s Kinect Technology will be used on a wider scale. Completely controller-less gaming. I keep thinking of Iron Man, the movie and all the funky screens and hand waving.
