Timekeeping has gone atomic thanks to Casio. Casio introduced Wave Ceptor watches in 2008 which feature Atomic timekeeping technology. Atomic timekeeping technology uses a multi-band time calibration signal receptor which has the ability to receive time-calibrates signals from transmissions stations around the world and those signals automatically synchronize the date and time and display them on the watch. The watch can receive data up to six times a day from the nearest station. Signals in the US are transmitted from Ft. Collins Colorado. The best signals are received in the middle of the night and the watch is automatically updated.

Casio has been on the cutting edge of electronic technology ever since Kashio Tadao formed Casio Computer Company LTD in Tokyo in 1946. Tadao and his brothers developed the first 10 key electronic calculators with unique display features in 1954.

In 1957, Uchida Yoko became Casio’s exclusive dealer, Yoko handled sales and Casio handled development and production. That agreement helped the company become a driving force in calculator technology. Through the years the company continued to expand their watch line. In 1989 Casio introduced a digital watch with weather prediction sensors. The watch had a barometer sensor that measured air pressure every three hours. When a bar on the right side of the watch went up that meant that the weather would improve, if it went down the weather would get nasty. The sensor could also indicate altitude and underwater depth. Those features made the watch an instant hit, so the company introduced a complete line of sensor watches.

In 1992 the company released a watch that was a blood-pressure monitor and in 1994 they introduced the Baby-G shock resistant watch for women. In 1998 Casio introduced the PC compatible watch and in 2000 the company introduced a MP3 player type watch. The solar powered radio-controlled watch made its debut in 2001 and in 2002 the ultimate G-SHOCK model became a hit. Then in 2008 Casio released the G-SHOCK RISEMAN, which was the first 6 multi-band radio controlled watch. Casio developed a touch movement feature than produced excellent reception in a slim design. The Company continues to develop new electronic technology that offers innovative features and useful functions. Technology affects society. In fact, we feel its effect on our everyday life. It affects economic growth, our standard of living and our culture. However, some of the effects of technology are highly beneficial and some detrimental. One should be careful that these effects on members of the society in turn affect business practices.

Technology affects our everyday life. We are surrounded by so much of technology, that we take it for granted and usually do not realize how much it affects us until we have to do without electricity, water, transport or telephone. Technological developments have raised the standard of living. In spite of inflationary pressure and considerably a high degree of unemployment, generally families eat better, wear a wider variety of clothing, and live in more comfortable homes.

Technology also influences basic aspects of our culture, including religion, education, mobility, health care, art, language, laws and their enforcement. For example, technological advances in health care allow physicians to treat their patients in a virtual environment through video conferencing, which again is helpful in legal environment too for the judges to proceed with investigations on hard core criminals, who need not be produced before the court for security reasons.

Every new technology is a force involved in creative destruction. Say, television hurts movies, synthetic fibres, rival for cotton fibre. The discovery of new technology even sometimes affects economic growth-TV with its high entertainment value takes away productive hours of mankind. Each new technology creates major long term consequences, that are not always foreseeable. How do you justify nations spending more money to develop missiles, nuclear weapons and bombs for the sake of security?

Developing nations have to buy technology from foreign countries, as they are not resourceful in terms of capital needed for Research and Development, expertise, patents, licenses, equipments and so on. This transfer of technology involves huge costs as a result of which a vicious circle is formed, in which weak technology creates dependence and dependence creates weakness.

The recent trend can be enumerated through this slogan, “Conserve, reduce and recycle”. The stress today is on clean production measures, advanced robotics, zero-emition vehicles, material recycling and alternative fuels and materials. In working closely with technology providers over the years, I regularly discover that these companies are making common mistakes that devalue the company, leave revenue on the table, or jeopardize their long-term health. So this special article identifies the top 10 of these mistakes to help you avoid making them.
10. Failure to register a federal copyright for company-developed software
Your company has spent months, and maybe years developing the next-big-thing. You’re out there licensing it to customers, fighting off competitors, and trying to maximize your revenues. What would you do if a customer was misusing your software? What if a competitor was copying parts of it to use in its product? There are various ways to respond to these problems, but one of the easiest to way to strengthen your claims is to register a copyright for the software with the United States Copyright Office. Registration provides you with an enhanced ability to have a court prevent infringing use of your software, and a greater amount of damages that are recoverable. The best part is that registration is relatively easy and inexpensive.
9. Licensing technology too broadly
So you’ve landed that big deal with that big customer. You’ve carefully priced the deal based upon your expectations of how the customer is going to use your technology – by a specific group within the customer’s large organization. You’re hoping that the success of this deal will lead to a greater adoption of your technology within the rest of the company, and ultimately more revenue for you. Unfortunately, you later learn that this one group is sharing your technology throughout the rest of the company, with no additional license fees to you, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Why? By failing to carefully and narrowly draw up the license grant in your agreement, you’ve unwittingly granted the entire company the rights to use your technology, and you’ve left a pile of cash on the table.
8. Failure to provide detailed support and maintenance policies
Too often, once a company’s technology is ready to be licensed, determining how to support the technology becomes an afterthought. General and non-descriptive obligations like “providing telephone and email support” and “providing updates” are invitations for disagreements and missed expectations. When is phone support being offered? How quickly will you respond to problems? What is considered and update and what is a new product for which you would charge the customer separately? Many times, you need your customer to provide you with certain information about the problem before you can diagnose and fix it. Set the appropriate expectations in your support and maintenance policies and avoid these issues in the future.
7. Not contracting customers to recurring support fees
Customers want and expect that you will be there to support your product, assist with problems, and provide them updates when you add features or fix bugs. Customers also expect that you will regularly charge them for these services, so why do so many technology vendors sell a product to a customer and fail to structure regular and recurring support fees? In general, a technology vendor’s highest profit margins are realized through a support fee stream, and not in the upfront license charge.
6. Inadequate non-disclosure and non-compete agreements with employees and contractors
The technology business is one of the most competitive industries in the market. Why take a chance losing your competitive advantage by not ensuring that your intellectual property, customer lists, trade secrets, and other sensitive information are properly protected through appropriate agreements with your employees, contractors, and vendors? Finding and using some form agreement that you saw floating around on the Internet somewhere may actually make matters worse if you don’t fully understand the terms. Moreover, simple steps can be taken to ensure that anything developed by your employees is, and remains, your company’s property.
5. Giving away intellectual property ownership too liberally
Many technology companies develop customized technology for their customers, or make customized modifications to their existing technology on behalf of a particular customer. And most customers argue that if they’re paying for it, they want to own it. But giving away your company’s intellectual property in these instances can prevent you from reusing it for other customers – effectively shutting down a potential source of revenue in the future. And many times, your customers may not need to actually “own” the developments – a license right can often do the trick.
4. Using overly broad or subjective acceptance testing
It is not uncommon or unreasonable for customers to want to “kick the tires” of your technology before they pay for it. Problems arise when the customer has an unreasonable expectation of what the technology is supposed to achieve, and either want to withhold payment, or force you to provide extra services to meet that unreasonable expectation. This especially manifests itself when a customer includes acceptance testing language in a contract which is not tied to objective and realistic standards. Although it can be a laborious effort, taking the time to objectify these standards with the customer in the contract can save you significant time down the road, and get you paid faster.
3. Offering liberal source code escrow release conditions
For software developers, you know that your source code is the “crown jewels” of your business. It is the core of your technology, representing months or years of your blood, sweat, and tears. Yet many software companies are willing to give it away, for free, to their customers. How? By entering into a source code escrow agreement with a customer and allowing it to be released to them in situations where the code still holds value for you. Many customers will demand the source code be released to them if you stop supporting the software, but the intellectual property in the code may still be used in your other products or technology, effectively giving your customer the tools it needs to duplicate your technology. Creating very narrow and specific source code release conditions can minimize this impact.
2. Undervaluing technology
What is your technology worth? It’s a difficult question, and value can be measured and determined in many ways. Many new technology companies feel compelled to undercharge for their technology in an effort to break into the market. Although there is certainly some merit in that, I see vendors consistently undervaluing what their technology is worth, leaving significant revenue on the table. Understanding the impact and loss to the customer if they DON’T license your technology is the first key to pricing your product. Plus, under-pricing your product can create an impression that the technology is “cheap” – not a label that will build a positive reputation of your company in the long run.
1. Using a form license and/or services agreement that doesn’t fit your business model
Capturing exactly how you want to provide your product or services to your customer, allocating the risks, and creating each party’s obligations and rights, is not a simple or quick process. Replicating some other company’s form agreement not only exposes you to risks that you may not be aware of, but potentially violates the other company’s copyright in their agreement, and raises the risks outlined in the other points of this list. Having a customized agreement created for you that aligns with your business processes, mitigates your risks, and addresses the laws that apply in your jurisdiction for your industry is a key component in running a successful technology business.

The best projects normally take several steps to carry out. Most rewarding tasks take some time, demand a good number of basic steps plus consistent effort. To have success it’s essential to prepare yourself well, set clear objectives, work effectively and persevere. Whichever task or project you choose, this tends to be true, but for new waste technology projects this is particularly true, due to the difficult problems faced.

But it’s not that difficult really, if you break it into clear individual steps as we have done in the article which follows.

This is the one and only way to achieve success at your goal to promote new waste technologies as an alternative to incineration, and suggest it can be simplified to merely 5 simple steps:

Step 1. For a UK alternative to incineration to be viable it will need to be good at the diversion of waste from landfill. Most importantly the diversion of organic/biological waste from landfill, to meet European Union targets. You will need to consider what are these technologies and how will they help to meet LATS. This will be a task of critical importance because the introduction of the Landfill Allowances Trading Scheme (LATS) in April 2005 has left all local authorities with key decisions to make in terms of how they are going to divert enough biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) from landfill to meet their LATS targets. Most UK local authorities have been using incineration after recycling and diverting all but their residual waste, but alternatively they could introduce new waste technologies into their waste management process stream.

However, as we have shown this type of solution brings with it a number of questions. Not least, as we have already indicated we must ask what are these technologies and how will they help to meet LATS?

Make sure you do not overlook or by-pass this, because answering these questions is essential to select a viable new waste technology, and the stakes are high as unless the local authority meets its LATS target, it will be fined by the UK government. And, if nationally we do not meet the targets overall, the EU will fine us as a nation.

Step 2. Any adoption of a new waste technology must be able to satisfactorily answer the question; What are the residuals and are there markets for these? This important step demands all your attention. Here is the way to do it right: Make sure that you select a new waste technology from which the residuals can be sold, if not at a profit, at a price which helps pay for the extra cost of the waste technology which will process the waste. There are a few reasons this is often important. The principal one is no new waste technology will be acceptable to the public and comply with LATS, or as a financial proposition, unless it produces residual materials which have a value and don’t in the end have to be landfilled for the want of an alternative disposal route.

Step 3. Decide who will invest in the technologies. The reason for this will be to that a private partner will be needed to implement any new waste technology, as the Council won’t have the skills or money to go it alone. Additionally you will want to make sure that the partner is a solid company which holds the necessary skills and will pass the government’s tests for the award of public investment, once the project gets started.

Step 4. Consider, will the technologies receive planning permission, how long will this take and what are the issues likely to hinder this process. Which means, talking to the local authority planning experts and gauging public opinion in the area.

Step 5. How will the public perceive these technologies? Are they likely to create huge public debate? Also, will the preceding issues in combination with the last question all add up to a large list of unknowns which make embarking upon the promotion of new waste technologies too risky for the local authority to carry out. After all, it is not their role to speculate in new technologies that are largely unproven and may not work, potentially developing prototype plants and causing wastage of ratepayers money. Additionally, how do you get all those who are required to play a key role in the decision-making process suitably informed to perform their roles effectively?

Finally, if you have followed the above suggestions closely, you can expect to triumph over the down sides and achieve your goals, with all the current advantages and also the fruits that implies! Accept the rewards and respect. You managed to do it therefore you deserve the credit! It was you that set out to reach your ultimate goal and also you who succeeded!
